I think he meant that people shouldn’t characterize him as a “conservative” but as someone that believes in freedom. People draw differing opinions for the word “conservative”. Some people see it as people that are fiscally responsible and free market believer and others see it as people that are immovable stones that believe in big corporations. Over the last 2 or 3 decades the word “conservative” and “liberal” has changed meanings.

He uses his own definition of “conservative” as something like preserving the large size of government and the small amount of freedom and uses “liberal” closer to the sense of “classic liberal.”

You are correct: the American tradition is for conservative to be closer to constitutionalist and small government (and, thus, freedom). And liberal to be large government and (bullshit) reinterpretations of the constitution, which inevitably lead to less freedom.

@AmericanTops Freidman makes the distinction between conservatism and freedom because, unlike your statement would imply, conservatism and freedom are not always the same. Look to prohibition of drugs, prostitution, gambling, *** marriage, and tendencies for corporate welfare etc. Both conservatives and liberals like to feel like they stand for freedom while ignoring the times they destroy it. Freidman was a Libertarian. His quote reflects that.

Yes, Individual has the responsibility and most of them want to own a house with no down payment (weather they can afford the monthly payment or not it is their own responsibility).

It’s generally understood that conservatives support economic freedom; low taxes, free trade etc. but not social freedom i.e. legalization of drugs, *** marriage etc.

Either his comment was based on that, or he is using his own definition of conservative rather than as is commonly understood. His definition being; sticking with the usual dogma of the need for government intervention in everything.

One unfortunate quote from Milton Friedman here: “I’m not a conservative; I believe in freedom.” SO DO CONSERVATIVES! Freedom is one of the things worth conserving! Duh – oh well. So, a conservative who is conserving the correct things is NOT in disagreement with Milton Friedman, so his remark just needs to be understood correctly. Conservatism and freedom are on the SAME SIDE!

If the Dense kid would have allowed Friedman to answer, perhaps he would have understood, the things he was asking about, a little better.. But he was not interested in understanding this correctly.. only to somehow prove Friedman wrong.

Why are “free market” and “capitalism” confused? There is a lot of economic activity that is parasitic. Like gambling, entertainment, porn, excessive speculation, etc.

Very large corporations have no stock holder with a controlling interest. When they fail or do evil can it be blamed on capitalism?

Milton’s point about it works best if everyone acts in their own interest is intriguing. Take the case of a shoal of Sardines or a flock of birds beings attacked by a predator(s). They all swirl around as if one united body evading capture. However, studies showed that actually each fish or bird was acting independently keeping the perfect distance from its fellow so it would not be caught RATHER than all helping each other not get caught. The fact they all got scoffed has never been explained..
